Smoothies are a great way to pack in nutrition. This recipe uses mild flavored white beans to add protein, fibre and creaminess to a smoothie without using any dairy or protein powders. What to you need to make a dairy-free mango smoothie?

You only need a few ingredients to make this smoothie:

Orange Juice – orange juice is the main liquid in this smoothie and adds lots of vitamin C and sweet and refreshing flavor.

Mango – frozen mango chunks work well in smoothies. They are so much easier than peeling and cutting mangos and since they are frozen, they will keep the drink nice and cold so you don’t need to add ice and dilute the flavor.

White kidney or cannellini beans – canned white beans add tons of nutrition to this smoothie. They have iron, protein, fibre and vitamins and minerals. Iron from plant-based foods is better absored when paired with a source of Vitamin C, such as orange juice. This smoothie is a good option for those looking to increase their iron intake. Be sure to drain and rinse your beans well and opt for low or no sodium added versions.

Chia seeds – a tablespoon of chia seeds add some more fibre and healthy omega-3 fats to this smoothie. You could substitue flax seeds or hemp hearts.

Note: This recipe does not call for protein powder but you could add it. I would recommend a flavorless variety. Flavored protein powder will make the smoothie too sweet.
